DropDMG 3.7 – Quickly create disk image (dmg) archives
DropDMG allows users to quickly create .dmg archives.
Disk images pack entire folders or disks into a single compressed file, either for transport across the Internet or simply for backup. They are Apple’s preferred format for distributing Mac software. Disk images are also the only archive format whose contents you can directly access in the Finder.
DropDMG is the easiest way to create Mac OS X disk images, as well as cross-platform archives. Just drag and drop a folder or file and you’re done. Or, you can drag an existing disk image or archive onto DropDMG to convert it to any of the other supported formats or to burn it to CD or DVD.
DropDMG supports advanced options such as encrypted and segmented disk images, WYSIWYG layout with background pictures and custom volume icons, and rich-text license agreements in multiple languages. There are many time-saving features, and it can also be automated via AppleScript, the command-line, and Automator.
WHAT’S NEW
Version 3.7:
- Updated DropDMG’s application icon for macOS Tahoe 26 and the new Liquid Glass design language. It no longer appears in “squircle jail” and now adapts as you change the macOS appearance to use the Dark, Clear, and Tinted icon styles.
- Added images for each menu item when running on macOS Tahoe 26.
- Added support for disk image files in the new Apple Sparse Image Format (ASIF):
- Like the old .sparseimage
format, the .asif
format uses a single file and only consumes disk space based on the amount of data stored (rather than the disk image’s logical capacity). It is much faster than either the .sparseimage
or .sparsebundle
format but requires macOS Tahoe 26 or later.
- Like the old .sparseimage
- Most of DropDMG’s feature set works with ASIF disk images. You can:
- Create blank ASIF disk images, using the APFS file system, and specify the capacity and volume name.
- Create new ASIF images from folders, packages, and individual files, with various options for specifying the destination.
- Convert other disk image formats to ASIF.
- Slice and stitch ASIF disk images.
- Verify and checksum ASIF disk images.
- Attach and detach ASIF disk images, optionally with a password.
- Set the read-only vs. writable state.
- Configure ASIF disk images with custom volume icons, volume icon placement, background images, and other layout options.
- Build ASIF disk images from a folder with the contents and layout.
- Control ASIF disk image creation from the command-line.
- Fixed an issue where a progress window might be empty when creating an image from a folder.
- Optimized the creation of APFS device images on macOS Tahoe 26 to be much faster and to show more accurate progress reporting.
- DropDMG now defaults to using APFS on macOS Tahoe 26.
- The password-protect option now supports storing passwords in iCloud Keychain on macOS Tahoe 26.
- Updated to MacDriver 4.2.0.
REQUIREMENTS
- Intel, 64-bit processor
